There's a book Sunshine, by Robin McKinley (who is a very good fantasy writer), that I thought was a more satisfying take on vampires. I think just one-off, not a series. Though the main character is still young, but not high school.

Moonlight was kinda fun too.

(and yeah, the repeating high school thing is CRAZY)

I totally agree-- something that I think was actually handled better in the short lived TV series Moonlight (on DVD in January 09) -- which was SO good and doesn't get near enough attention from vampire fans...

Exactly!

Here's the other thing that doesn't make sense to me about Edward in the Twilight series -- he's going to high school ... again and again and again! Okay, I get it that the family or clan or whatever wants to stay in one place for as long as possible and so present the "younger" folks like Edward as high school age (as indeed he is, insofar as one permanently 17 is high school age), but good heavens, at some point couldn't they pretend to home-school him? I mean, I teach high school and think that I make it pretty fun, but even I don't think that one could possible spend year after year taking tests on the Civil War and dissecting frogs and reading the Catcher in the Rye and -- most importantly -- surrounded by teenagers who are ostensibly one's peers, and not go a bit crazy.
